Our Story

How fermatat Came to Be

fermatat was established in Kuala Lumpur by a small group of legal practitioners who shared a common frustration: too often, clients came to them having been talked at rather than listened to. The name itself is borrowed from music — a fermatat is a pause, a held note, a moment of deliberate stillness before the next phrase begins. It felt like the right way to describe the kind of practice we wanted to build.

From the beginning, the focus has been on three areas where we saw a real need for careful, knowledgeable guidance: immigration and work permit matters, intellectual property registration, and regulatory compliance. Malaysia's legal environment in these fields is detailed and layered. It asks for practitioners who are willing to stay close to the specifics and communicate them plainly.

Located along Persiaran Stonor in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's commercial district, our office is easy to reach and designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating. We work with foreign nationals, local entrepreneurs, multinational companies, and small businesses alike. Each engagement begins the same way — with a conversation about what you actually need.

Over the years, fermatat has grown quietly. We have never chased volume. Instead, we have invested in deepening our knowledge of the regulatory landscape, strengthening our working relationships with agencies like the Immigration Department and MyIPO, and maintaining the kind of attentiveness that every client deserves.

What Guides Us

Our Values

Listen Before Advising

Good counsel starts with understanding. We give our full attention to each client's circumstances before forming any recommendation.

Thoroughness Over Speed

We work carefully. Legal matters deserve attention to detail, and we would rather take the time to get things right than hurry through a process.

Plain Language

Legal concepts do not need to be obscure. We explain everything in terms that make sense, so you always know where you stand.

Legal Expertise Rooted in Kuala Lumpur

fermatat provides legal counsel across three practice areas that are vital to businesses and individuals operating in Malaysia. Our immigration advisory work covers the full spectrum of pass types under the Immigration Act 1959/63, from initial eligibility reviews through to approval notifications. We coordinate directly with the Immigration Department and maintain up-to-date knowledge of policy changes affecting employment passes, dependent passes, and professional visit passes.

In intellectual property, we work with startups, established businesses, content creators, and inventors to safeguard their creative and commercial assets. Whether the matter involves trademark searches, patent filings, or industrial design registrations, we handle the entire process through MyIPO while keeping clients informed of timelines and any developments that may arise.

Our regulatory compliance practice assists companies in understanding their obligations under the frameworks administered by Bank Negara Malaysia, MCMC, MDEC, and MIDA. Through structured compliance audits and tailored remediation roadmaps, we help businesses identify gaps, manage risks, and build sustainable compliance programmes as regulations continue to develop.
